Apotheosis Big 'Casters :: Karchev Print
Written by David "Serpent Six" Ray

Introduction

He's big, he's bad, he's nearly 100 years old....it's Karchev the Terrible! Unfortunately, I performed terribly with Karchev at Indy. At least he looks good painted up! Here's a list of colors used:

  • VMC 128
  • GW Bleached Bone
  • VMC Black Red
  • VGC Gory Red
  • Glaze Medium
  • Tamiya Clear
  • Higgins Brown Fadeproof Ink
  • GW Red Ink
  • GW Yellow Ink

I was really looking to do something different with Khador for this scheme, so I went with a high contrast yellow-brown and deep red. I think it turned out quite well. The yellow browns are a base coat of VMC 128, applied in 3~4 very thin layers. After that, it's progressive highlights of the base color plus Bleached Bone. A liberal wash of Tamiya Dirty Wash (A full bottle of Tamiya Clear and 15 drops of Higgins Brown Ink) provides some quick 'insta-shading', as well as smooths out the transitions of the main color. The Reds are a base coast of VMC Black Red, and similar progressive highlights, adding VGC Gory Red to the mix. A final wash of Red/Yellow Ink ties the reds together. The metals are all done using techniques and colors found in prior articles.

Tip #44
When working with green stuff. Let it stand for about 20 minutes after mixing, It is usually much easier to work with once it's starting to cure.
